The word mercy appears some 341 times in the bible. The Greek and Hebrew words associated with the word; compassion, kindness, and goodness appear some 454 times. The bible emphasizes compassion as a core characteristic of both God and HIs followers. Ephesians 4:32-Be kind and helpful to one another, compassionate, understanding, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ also forgave you.
Recently I spoke truth t someone and I have struggled to identify if my words were helpful and compassionate. We all have been on the receiving end of the truth from others. I know I have had to hear the hard truth at times.
Yes the words stung at first. But if our, my heart is in-like with Gods commandments I can begin to pray on those words with a thankful heart.
When we are the receiver or giver of the truth we should ask ourselves; “What are the motives behind the words, ” Here are some verese help guide us
Proverbs 12:18-The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. The bible dosent stop there. The bible encourages addressing sin or wrongdoing. Galatians 6:1 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. When someone is misrepresenting facts or causing damage through deception. Jesus calls the devil the father of lies. When withholding the truth could lead to harm or danger. Speaking the truth to protect those affected is necessary. Ephesians 4:25 – Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.
As we mature i our spirituality, we are no longer spiritual infants, easily deceived, and tossed to and fro by cunning and craftiness of people in the deceitful ways. Paul encourages us in Ephesians 4:22-25 to put off our old self, which has been corrupted by it’s deceitful desires.
I have learned that is better if you speak your truth. When we share with someone hoping they will speak your truth to someone else we don’t know where they are spiritually. When you prepare to speak the truth to someone it is always a great idea to seek counsel and pray for God to speak through you.
