there is a little red devil on our left shoulder and a white angel on the right. They are just hanging out there waiting for an opportunity to show up and persuade you to choose their way. Evil telling us what fun it will be, telling us no one will know and the angel reminding us to choose the right thing to do. Evil enticing us by all we will get for ourselves and the angel jumping up and down waving his arms trying to get our attention. The angel gently responds with love and having a conversation. James 4:17 So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
Now we all know that this silly exchange dosent really happen. At least I have never seen it happen in my life. “The devil made me do it” has never stood up in court. From the beginning in Genesis 3 sin entered the world when Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit.
So its Adam and Eves fault I act the way I do! Wait hold on just a minute. In Romans 5:12 we read “When Adam sinned, sin entered the world, Adams sin brought death, so death spread to everyone”.
Yes we have a sinful nature in us, that we can overcome. We can seek God first, His presence in our life. Through the Holy Spirit as a resident in our heart He will guide our character, transforming us to follow Gods will for us. Our moral compass has a magnet that draws our heart to God and it is no longer spinning out of control.
Years ago at a very pivotal time in my life I heard a song from the Little River band; Cool Change. The chorus that repeats goes like this. Time for a cool change…I know its time for a cool change and now that my life is so prearranged…I know that its a time for a cool change. These words resonated with me because of the freedom we can experience through our loving Lord and savior.
In 1 Corinthians Paul writes to the Christian community. He provided guidance in the foundations of believer’s life. 1 Corinthians 6:11 says; Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed, you were made Holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the spirit of Our God.
A sinful nature can have a tight hold on a person moral compass. People go from thing to thing in their life seeking satisfaction. For a believer as we come up from the cool waters of baptism; our old self, our old nature begins to wash away. When we seek Gods prearranged life we no longer go to the world for satisfaction. We find sitting alone with Jesus is enough.
I want to leave you with these words from Isaiah 40:31- But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
